Cunca Wulang Waterfall – Hidden Canyon in West Flores

Cunca Wulang Waterfall is one of the most beautiful natural attractions near Labuan Bajo. Located in the foothills of the Mount Mbeliling rainforest, this limestone waterfall and canyon offers a perfect place to relax, swim, and explore nature.

Natural Beauty of Cunca Wulang

Cunca Wulang features a series of clear freshwater pools surrounded by high limestone cliffs. Over hundreds of years, flowing water has carved unique rock formations into the canyon walls, including small natural caves and smooth cliff surfaces.

Further downstream, the narrow canyon opens into wider areas with beautiful cascades that stretch for several kilometers toward the valley below. The scenery is ideal for photography, nature lovers, and adventure travelers visiting West Flores.

Activities at Cunca Wulang

Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including:

For adventurous travelers, it is possible to hike and explore from the top of the main waterfall down along the canyon. However, always prioritize safety before entering the water.

Important Safety Information

Cunca Wulang can be dangerous during or after heavy rainfall. Even small amounts of rain upstream can cause water levels to rise quickly and create strong currents inside the narrow canyon.

In March 2016, two tourists and a local guide tragically drowned after being caught in fast-moving water. Always check weather conditions before swimming or jumping, and enter the water at your own risk.

Visiting after heavy rain is strongly not recommended. The canyon pools can turn into powerful, muddy torrents, and swimming or canyoning becomes extremely dangerous.

How to Get to Cunca Wulang

From Labuan Bajo, drive approximately 26 kilometers east along the Trans Flores Highway. At Cekonbo, turn left toward Wersawa Village. It is about 4 kilometers downhill to reach the village.

From Wersawa Village, continue with a 45-minute hike to reach the canyon. The first part of the trek is relatively easy, passing rice fields and small plantations of banana, vanilla, coffee, candlenut, and cacao trees. Once entering the rainforest area, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging. The return journey follows the same route.

Entrance fee: IDR 30,000 – 50,000 per person (subject to change).
Local guide service is available for an additional cost and is recommended for safety.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Cunca Wulang Waterfall is during the dry season, when water conditions are stable and the road to Wersawa Village is safer. Avoid visiting during heavy rain, as the road can become steep, rough, and sometimes impassable.
